Terry T. Canady was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with felony possession of a firearm by a felon and misdemeanor counts of carrying a concealed weapon as a repeat offender and possession of a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school.
Canady, who made his initial appearance Tuesday afternoon, faces a fine of $25,000 and 10 years in prison for the felony. The misdemeanors carry a total fine of $11,000 and nine months in county jail.
According to the criminal complaint:
An officer was dispatched to the center, which is designed as a “gun free” zone with signs posted declaring that. Police made contact with Canady, who had a backpack that was open on top. The officer observed a black semi-automatic pistol in the backpack.
Canady stated he didn’t have a concealed permit for the gun, which had a live round in the chamber and five live rounds in the magazine. The defendant stated he carries the gun with him for protection and typically carries it with him when he attends functions with large groups of people.
The defendant also stated there had been an altercation at the center during a basketball game, but he denied he was a participant. He said he obtained the gun between February and May of 2018.
Court records indicate that Canady has a previous felony conviction for possession of marijuana in Racine, which prohibits him from possessing a firearm.
