A Racine man suffered minor injuries after exchanging gunfire with police just after midnight Tuesday near 11th and Villag street.

An officer with the Racine Police Department saw Joseph Washington shooting a firearm toward a group of people in the 500 block of 11th Street from a car he was in at the time, according to a press release.

Police ordered him to drop the gun, but Washington ignored them and he got out of the car. Running on foot, the officers caught up with him. He was taken into police custody in the 1000 block of College Avenue with the help of a Mount Pleasant Police Department K-9 unit.

“No one was struck during the incident,” the press release reads. “Washington received minor injuries while attempting to flee officers and from a K-9 bite. The Officer involved in the shooting is on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.”

Racine Police investigators are interested in any additional information that anyone may have about this crime.  Any witnesses, or citizens with information, are urged to call the Racine Police Department Investigations Unit at (262) 635-7756.

Those who wish to remain anonymous may contact Crime Stoppers at (262) 636-9330, or text 274637 (CRIMES). The text message should begin with RACS.
