The arrest of Rachel Barron should serve as a warning for all drivers: never leave your car running and unattended. Racine police say Barron hopped into a running car at a local gas station and drove away while the owner of the vehicle was inside the station.

Barron, 32, of Racine, was charged Tuesday by the Racine County District Attorney’s office with one felony count of driving a car without the owner’s consent. If convicted, she faces up to six years in prison and/or up to $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, a woman filled up her car Friday at the BP gas station located at 1975 State Street. She left her car running while she ran into the station when Barron got into the vehicle and drove away.

Police say the owner of the car provided a description of Barron, and they located the car at the intersection of Maple and Jones Streets with Barron still behind the wheel. Video surveillance from the gas station clearly depicts Barron getting into the running car and driving off.

Barron was assigned a $1,000 signature bond at her initial appearance Tuesday and will next be in court Jan. 3 for her preliminary hearing.
