Police: Recovering Addict Charged with Shoplifting

A woman living in a group home for recovering drug addicts allegedly stole from Walmart.

Mount Pleasant police say a 21-year-old woman from a group home for recovering drug addicts stole less than $60 worth of goods from Walmart.

Meghan Kaufman, of Sturtevant, was charged Friday by the Racine County District Attorney‘s office with one count of misdemeanor retail theft. If convicted, she faces up to nine months in jail and/or up to $10,000 in fines.

According to the criminal complaint, police were called Dec. 28 to Walmart, 3049 Oakes Road, for a report of shoplifting. When officers arrived, store security said they observed Kaufman wrap some items in her coat and stuff them in her purse before passing the last point-of-purchase.

Police say Kaufman admitted to taking $57.78 worth of goods because she didn’t have any money. According to a worker from the group home for recovering drug addicts where Kaufman lives, the defendant was with other home residents shopping at Walmart when the theft occurred.

Kaufman remains in the Racine County Jail on a $250 cash bond. She will next be in court Feb. 1 for her preliminary hearing.
