ROCHESTER – An attack with a machete by a 41-year-old Burlington man against his mother Saturday led to two felony charges being filed Monday in Racine County Circuit Court.
Edward L. Esposito was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with two counts of first-degree reckless injury with the use of a dangerous weapon.
Each charge carries a fine of $100,000 and 25 years in prison. Esposito, who is in custody, made his initial court appearance Monday.
Man charged with stabbing mom with machete
According to the criminal complaint:
Deputies were dispatched to a residence in the Village of Rochester, where they located the defendant and took him into custody.
Police spoke with the victim and observed that she had sustained a small puncture wound to her right thigh. Rescue personnel told officers the victim’s blood pressure levels were extremely high and near the levels of someone about to have a stroke.
The woman, who stated her son lived with her, said that he had been on an “alcohol bender” for the past six days. She said he came home very upset and stuck a small screwdriver into the wall to hold up his Social Security Card. He then told his mother and her boyfriend, “If you touch this you will die.”
After his mother removed the screwdriver, Esposito allegedly went to the basement and came up with a machete in his right hand and a butterfly knife in his left. When he approached her, she went into the bedroom and closed the door when he swung the machete at her but missed. He then stabbed her in the thigh with the butterfly knife.
A portable breath test at the scene showed the defendant had a blood-alcohol content of 0.240. He told police he hadn’t slept in seven days and had been drinking a lot.
Esposito, who is being held at the Racine County Jail on a cash bond, is set to have a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m. Aug. 30 in Racine County Felony Court.
