Man misses his wedding after 8th drunk driving charge

Wedding day drunken driving

A Waukesha man set to be married on Saturday ended up spending his wedding day in jail after he was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with drunk driving.

Kevin R. Tarbox, 47, of Waukesha, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office with drunken driving (8th offense), having a prohibited alcohol concentration, and driving while his license was revoked. If convicted of the charges, Tarbox faces up to 12 years, six months in prison and/or fined up to $25,000.

According to a criminal complaint by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office, a deputy with the Racine County Sheriff’s Department saw a blue Jeep Wrangler Friday night speeding up behind him and passing him at over 100 mph on Interstate 94 near Highway KR.  The Jeep weaved through all of the traffic lanes around traffic in a construction zone, which had a speed limit of 60 mph.

When Tarbox pulled over, the deputy noted that he smelled like alcohol. A woman in the passenger seat told the officer that she and Tarbox were set to be married Saturday. She had already purchased the wedding dress, she told the deputy.

Having an occupational license, Tarbox was driving within the limitations of the hours he and the court had agreed upon. But he had a warrant for his arrest.

The officer asked Tarbox to get out of the car, but he was unsteady on his feet, the report states.

“The odor of intoxicants was noticeable even after Tarbox exited the car,” according to the complaint.

Arrested on the warrant, Tarbox failed a field sobriety test. He is being held at the Racine County Jail on a probation hold for the warrant. Racine County Court Commissioner Alice Rudebusch set a $7,500 cash bond at an initial appearance held Wednesday. A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. Jan. 10.
