Corrections Officer Caught With Pot, Police Say

Keith Christensen Corrections Officer

A corrections officer with the Racine Correctional Institution was charged with a felony drug charge on Monday after he was pulled over by the Caledonia Police Department.

Keith Christensen, 50, of Racine, was charged by the Racine County District Attorney’s Office Monday with a felony count of marijuana possession (2nd offense) and a misdemeanor count of possession of drug paraphernalia. If convicted of both charges, Christensen faces up to three years seven months in prison and/or fined up to $10,500.

Christensen had a prior misdemeanor conviction for possession of cocaine in 1995.

According to the criminal compliant, an officer with the Caledonia Police Department noticed a truck weaving on May 29 on Five Road from Nicholson Road. The officer pulled Christensen, who was driving the truck, over. When Christensen rolled down the window, the officer noted a strong scent of cologne and marijuana.

“As I leaned in closer to the vehicle, I detected the odor of what I know to be marijuana coming from inside,” the complaint reads. “Christensen continued to grow more and more nervous, so I had him step out of the truck.”

Becoming defensive, he told the officer that he didn’t use marijuana and that there wasn’t anything in the car. But the officer explained that he could smell it. Christensen told the officer that he worked as a corrections officer for the Racine Correctional Institution and “certainly does not smoke marijuana.”

Searching the truck, the officer found a screwdriver that had black residue on it, and a metal marijuana pipe inside a soda cup. Christensen later told another officer that he had a bag of marijuana hidden “in his genitals.” The bag of marijuana weighed about 1.3 grams.

In court on Monday, Racine County Court Commissioner John Bjelajac released Christensen on a $1,000 bond. A preliminary hearing has been set for 8:30 a.m. June 15 in front of Racine County Court Commissioner Alice Rudebusch.
